General Motors
GMA Legacy Automaker With an Engineering-Heavy Visa Profile
General Motors is not a generic IT-services profile. The direct GM LCA extract shows 4,564 full-year filings from FY2020 through FY2025, with roles concentrated in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, software, and vehicle validation.
That direct automaker total is deliberately separate from 1,763 additional full-year LCA rows tied to GM Financial and Cruise. Those filings are real GM ecosystem context, but they are not pooled into the automaker series shown throughout this page.
The peak year is FY2021, when GM filed 1,174 LCAs. FY2025 finished at 795, a 67.7% increase from FY2020. FY2026 is already in the chart as Q1 only, with 134 filings, so it should not be read as a full-year decline.
3 total denials across all years (0.1% of filings) - too small to display on this chart.
Associated Entities Change the Shape of the Story
General Motors, GM Financial, and Cruise are not interchangeable in this analysis. The app tracks direct General Motors sponsor rows only. GM Financial and Cruise have distinct business functions, locations, and role mixes, so folding them into the automaker total would make the page easier to misread.
The adjacent entities are still useful context. GM Financial adds 539 LCA rows through FY2026 Q1, concentrated around Texas software, systems, data, and finance-adjacent roles. Cruise adds 1,242 rows, centered in San Francisco software, robotics, research, and autonomous-vehicle work. Neither series behaves like the Michigan-heavy automaker profile.
| Entity | FY2020-FY2025 | Top Location |
|---|---|---|
Direct General Motors Included in the app's General Motors totals and charts as the direct automaker sponsor profile. | 4,564 | Warren, MI |
GM Financial Shown as adjacent context only; excluded from the direct automaker totals. | 526 | Arlington, TX |
Cruise Shown as adjacent context only; excluded from the direct automaker totals. | 1,237 | San Francisco, CA |
Michigan Is the Center of the Filing Map
Worksite counts put Warren, Michigan at the center of the GM profile, with 2,778 direct filings. Milford adds 948, Detroit adds 228, and Pontiac adds 138. The point is not a scattered national outsourcing footprint. It is an engineering and vehicle-development cluster around GM's Michigan operations.
Software still matters. Software developers, systems software, applications software, QA, and computer systems analyst rows account for 36.5% of the top-occupation sample. The vehicle story and the software-defined vehicle story are not separate in this data.
This site no longer charts H-1B filings as a share of workforce. The ratio can blur U.S. employees, global employees, contractors, and offshore delivery headcount into one denominator.
Rows with a disclosed U.S.-employee denominator available here: 6. The analysis now uses filings, approvals, wage, worksite, and title concentration instead.
Salary Premiums Sit Above Prevailing Wage
GM's FY2025 average offered H-1B salary is $142,067, compared with an average prevailing wage of $120,046. That is a $22,021 spread, or 18.3% above the prevailing wage average.
The BLS reference line shown here is the project's existing national software-developer median. GM's actual role mix is more engineering-heavy, so this is a narrow software-market comparison, not a complete benchmark for electrical, mechanical, and automotive engineering roles.
PERM Shows a Green Card Pipeline, Not a Petition Count
The direct GM PERM extract contains 868 green-card labor certification records from FY2020 through FY2025, including 178 in FY2025. These are not H-1B petitions. They are the employer labor certification records that can support permanent residency.
The status mix is overwhelmingly certified or certified-expired: 856 records, compared with 5 denied and 7 withdrawn. The same entity boundary applies here: GM Financial and Cruise are excluded from the PERM source set used for this page.
Cutting Americans While the LCAs Keep Coming
On May 11, 2026, GM started laying off 500 to 600 salaried IT workers. Bloomberg broke the story, CNBC confirmed it. The cuts are concentrated in Austin, Texas and Warren, Michigan.
Warren is the same Warren that anchors GM's H-1B footprint in this dataset. 2,778 direct LCA filings. The company is cutting American workers in the city where it files the most H-1B paperwork.
GM still had 82 open IT positions on the careers page the day the layoffs started, including AI, autonomous vehicles, and motorsports work. So this isn't about not needing the workers. The company is hiring. It just isn't hiring the people it's letting go.
This isn't even the first round. In October 2025 it was more than 200 CAD engineers, labeled "business conditions." This time the label is "transforming our IT organization." Same story, new vocabulary.
The Boundary Matters
The entity boundary is what keeps the charts readable. Direct GM rows are anchored by Warren and Milford engineering work. GM Financial is a Texas-heavy finance and software profile. Cruise is a San Francisco-heavy autonomous-vehicle software and robotics profile. Treating all three as one sponsor would blur the role mix the page is trying to explain.
The data on its own showed a concentrated H-1B footprint around vehicle development, not a clear replacement story. The May 2026 layoff round changes the read. Cutting hundreds of American IT workers in the same Warren that files the most LCAs, while keeping 82 IT roles posted on the careers page, is the pattern other employers on this site already show.
